Galleries in Belize City and in the town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye carry vibrant folk art, paintings, ceramics, and sculptures by Belizean artisans and artists. On the coast, most art shows a strong Afro-Caribbean bent. But in the western Cayo district, the Mayan and Spanish cultures have had a major influence on the arts. In Dangriga, painters depict life in traditional Garifuna villages. Belize has a National Dance Company, which was formed in 1991.
